Habitual Thinking – Why Excuses?

August 3, 2016

When we really want to do something but we know it is not the right thing to do we mischievously twist the truth to comfort ourselves by using an excuse. When Chico Marx’s wife found him kissing the chorus girl he said; ”I was not kissing her, I was just whispering in her mouth”.

Equally, when we do not want to do something that we consider not being important enough  but somehow we feel obligated to do it, we again mischievously twist the truth to comfort ourselves by using an excuse.

However, the real truth is that usually the excuse is apparent to everyone else except the person using it. It is like the little child whose pants dropped in the mall and he was standing there naked but he closed his eyes. His mom ran over there and pulled up his pants and asked; “why did you close your eyes instead of pulling up your pants and he responded; I did not want anyone to see me naked”.

Why do we use excuses?  The “Excuse” is a way of protecting some persona that you fear its loss will lessen you as whom you believe yourself to be so you must protect that persona at all costs even if you have to create a misconception of the truth within yourself .

So who would you be if you quiet down and are no longer the one they want you to be? Will you still use excuses to protect some idea that you may have of yourself that is not you and be bothered by the lies
