February 3, 2017

As there are so many massage styles out there, we decided to write a post about many of the questions we receive about the popular hot stone massage. This massage technique is used to treat sore muscles, enhance blood flow and relax nerves by using hot stones.  While this massage style is similar to deep tissue or Swedish massage, the warmth from the stones allows the muscles to relax more quickly making this treatment very relaxing when compared to other styles.

What is Hot Stone Massage Technique

In the Hot Stone Massage Technique, stones that are commonly made up of igneous rocks such as Basalt or other metamorphic rocks. These types of rocks are selected for their ability to take large amounts of pressure, as well as their ability to absorb and hold heat for extended periods of time.

The therapist carefully selects the right size, shape, and type of stones to work effectively for their purpose. Commonly the stones used in the therapy are with rounded edge.   Before use, stones are warmed, to 125 – 130 degrees Fahrenheit and then placed on specific pressure points to relax the muscles and are used as an extension of the therapist’s hands. The heat relaxes the muscles and allows the therapist to work the muscles tissues more deeply than without heat.
